The 140th Canton Fair runs 15 October to 4 November 2026 at the Pazhou complex in Guangzhou, in three phases. If you sell consumer products rather than sourcing from Chinese factories, the fair itself is not your channel — but being in Guangzhou while it runs is. Phases two and three cover home goods, personal care, food, health products, and baby products: exactly the categories where overseas brands enter China. And because you are physically here, the paperwork that normally takes three months by email can be signed in two days.

What the Canton Fair is, and is not, for a brand

The Canton Fair is a sourcing event. It exists so overseas buyers can find Chinese manufacturers. That is the direction of trade it was built for, and it is why roughly 314,000 overseas buyers attended the previous session.

If you are a consumer brand trying to sell into China, the exhibitor halls are not where your customer is. Walking the aisles looking for Chinese partners to distribute your product is largely a waste of a badge.

But the crowd is not monolithic. Mixed into those buyers are three groups that are directly relevant to you.

Who at the fair is actually your customer

  • Importers and distributors who already handle both directions. Many of them import into China as well as export out of it. They frequently hold brands they brought in but never got selling.
  • Overseas brand owners attending to find manufacturing partners. They are thinking about their supply chain today and their China sales next year. You are meeting them a year before they start looking for a partner.
  • Retail and marketplace buyers with China channels. They understand the market, which means you skip the education phase entirely.

The qualification question is simple: does this person sell to Chinese consumers, or buy from Chinese factories? If it is the former, you are having the right conversation.

The 140th session: dates and which phase matters

PhaseDates (2026)CategoriesRelevant to you?
Phase 1 15–19 October Home appliances, consumer electronics, industrial automation, machinery, new energy vehicles, lighting, hardware, tools, service robots Low
Phase 2 23–27 October Ceramics, kitchenware, houseware, home decor, garden, gifts, watches, building materials, sanitary ware, furniture, fashion accessories High
Phase 3 31 October – 4 November Personal care, food, health and medical products, baby and children's products, apparel, footwear, bags, home textiles, pet supplies, toys High

The complex closes for transition 20–22 October and 28–30 October. Total exhibition area is around 1.55 million square metres across roughly 30,000 exhibitors.

If you can only come once, come for phase two or three. Those are the categories where imported labels still outperform domestic ones in China — beauty and personal care, mother and baby, health supplements, and imported food.

Badge registration

Overseas buyer pre-registration is open year-round and does not require you to be a registered import business in China. Badges can be collected free of charge at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou South Railway Station, the Pazhou Hong Kong-Macao ferry port, designated partner hotels, and the fair's Hong Kong office.

Register before you travel. On-site badge processing during the opening days is slow, and you will lose half a day you could spend meeting people.

What you can only do in person in Guangzhou

This is the part that matters most, and it is the part most guides miss.

Almost every friction point in setting up China operations comes from the same root cause: remote identity and document verification. Notarisation, chop handover, bank account opening, legal representative signatures, platform identity checks. These processes are built around a person being present. When you are fourteen time zones away, every step becomes a month.

While you are in Guangzhou, they become a day.

TaskRemoteIn person in Guangzhou
Company document signing and chop handoverWeeks of courier and notarisation loopsSame day
Notarisation and apostille coordinationHandled via agents, error-proneReviewed face to face
Corporate bank accountOften requires presence anywayBooked around your trip

The practical version: the things that take three months by email take two days in person. If you were already considering setting up a Guangzhou entity or opening a Xiaohongshu presence, the fortnight you are here for the fair is the cheapest possible window to do it.

In Guangzhou for the fair? We can do the paperwork in person.

Bring your company registration, a passport copy, and your trademark certificate. We will tell you before you arrive exactly what can be completed during your trip — and what will still need to wait.

What to prepare before you arrive

  • Company registration certificate from your home jurisdiction, plus a certified Chinese translation if it is not already in Chinese or English.
  • Legal representative passport — the actual person, or a properly executed power of attorney if not.
  • Trademark certificate or the full chain of authorisation if you sell under licence.
  • One page on your brand — category, current markets, what you are trying to do in China. Not a company brochure.
  • A short list of who you want to meet — importers and distributors in your category, not exhibitors.

Do not bring company brochures to hand out. Bring a single page showing the competitive landscape for your category on Chinese platforms — who is already selling, how far they have got, and where the gaps are. That page starts better conversations than any amount of self-description, because it demonstrates that you understand the market you are asking them to enter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attend the Canton Fair if I am not buying from Chinese factories?

Yes. Overseas buyer registration does not require you to be a Chinese import business. If your goal is selling into China rather than sourcing, the exhibitor halls are low value but the attending crowd is not.

Which phase should a consumer brand attend?

Phase two (23–27 October) for home goods, gifts, and furniture. Phase three (31 October – 4 November) for personal care, food, health products, baby products, and apparel. Phase one is heavy machinery and electronics, with limited relevance.

How many buyers attend?

The 139th session drew 314,000 overseas buyers from 220 countries and regions. The 140th is expected to be comparable.

Can I open a company or Xiaohongshu account during my trip?

Document signing, chop handover, notarisation coordination, and platform identity checks can be completed in person. Government processing times still apply afterwards — company registration with a Guangzhou address typically runs six to ten weeks end to end, though your part of it is finished before you fly home.

Do I need to register before arriving?

Pre-registration is open year-round and strongly recommended. Badge collection is available at several locations including Baiyun Airport and Guangzhou South Railway Station.

The bottom line

The Canton Fair is a sourcing event, and pretending otherwise wastes your trip. But 314,000 overseas buyers pass through Guangzhou twice a year, and a meaningful fraction of them are the importers, distributors, and brand owners who need exactly what a local desk provides.

Come for phase two or three. Register early. Bring documents, not brochures. And use the fact that you are physically in Guangzhou to do the things that cannot be done from a distance.
